Government Issues New I-9 Form

Government Issues New I-9 Form

On November 7, 2007, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services ("USCIS") announced it has released a new version of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, and published the "Handbook for Employers, Instructions for Completing the Form I-9."The I-9 Form revisions are designed to achieve full compliance with the document reduction requirements of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 ("IIRIRA"), which reduced the number of documents employers may accept from newly hired employees during the employment eligibility verification process.

All employers are required to complete an I-9 Form for each employee hired in the United States. While USCIS encourages the use of the new form immediately, it has indicated that it will not be required until notice is published in the Federal Register (a publication date has not been set).To print and use the new I-9 Form, go to:

http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/I-9.pdf

To view and print the Fact Sheet from USCIS about the New I-9 Form, go to:

To view and print the Handbook for Employers, Instructions for Completing the Form I-9, go to:

We invite your inquires regarding the new version of Form I-9 or any other issue present in your workplace.
